The two most confusing words for ordinary people are agronomy and horticulture although most people remember horticulture as they associate it with farming. Despite many similarities as both agronomy and horticulture are practices related to the cultivation of plants in the world, there are enough differences between the two sciences that will be highlighted in this article.

What is Agronomy?
Agronomy is the science of crop cultivation in a more complete way than conventional agriculture. The essence of agronomy is to be efficient and effective in agricultural processes. Agronomist experts are concerned about improving agriculture to increase the profitability of farmers while at the same time conserving the atmosphere and nutrients in the soil. The word agronomy comes from the Greek Agro meaning field and nomo meaning management. It aims to improve farmers’ productivity but focus on crop production methods. It also learns about the weather and the characteristics of plants. It teaches how to control weeds and pests to improve crop production. Agronomists are scientists who are very concerned about the quality of the soil and structures and how to improve yields for farmers while conserving the environment at the same time.
What is Horticulture?
Horticulture is the science and art of planting plants on a smaller scale than agriculture. It is a practice that focuses more on value added plants than grains and cereals. Ornamental plants, flowers, fruits, vegetable nuts etc. are grown in small areas using horticultural practices. Farming can be done at home as in a garden, or it can be as extensive as it is in an international company that grows fruits or vegetables for people to eat around the world.
The branch of fruit horticulture is called pomology and the branch responsible for vegetables is called olericulture. The Horticultural branch that only works with flowers is called floriculture. There is also landscape horticulture related to the design and maintenance of residential areas in houses and businesses. It is also responsible for designing recreational areas and recreation areas, public parks, golf courses, and more.

Difference between Agronomy and Horiculture
